About the exhibition

In November 2014, in its Paris Gallery, Spéos presented for the first time the remarkable documentary
work of Chinese photographer Tang DeSheng on the “educated youth“, the zhiqing.

This exhibition was organized in partnership with Gao Lei, who graduated from Spéos in 2002.

During the Chinese Cultural Revolution launched by Mao Zedong, which lasted from 1966 to 1976, Tang DeSheng photographed students sent from urban areas to the countryside: the zhiqing.
These students, raised and educated in the cities, were sent to the countryside to learn about rural life and help farmers. They also had to spread urban culture to the rural population and were not allowed to return home.

The 6,000 photos taken by Tang DeSheng constitute an absolutely unique documentary collection on this event that affected a whole generation. Based on this striking experience, Spéos has engaged with Magnum Photos in the creation of a training program for the management of the photographic heritage.

It is led by a consortium of 5 European partners:
– Spéos International Photographic Institute in Paris, France.
– Magnum Endowment Fund (MFDD) in Paris, France.
– The Office For Photography (OFP) in Zagreb, Croatia.
