About the exhibition
“La voix de ma Grand-mère” is a visual project consisting of photography and hand painting that honors the unheard voices of Sanjyot Telang’s female ancestors. Defying the norms of traditionally dressed Indian women, the visuals often depict a sign of expansion and a profound freedom to be comfortable in one’s own skin. Through uninhibited poses, bold colors and strokes, the artist likes to think that she is freeing the spirit of her grandmothers from the constricting forces of patriarchy that denied them opportunities, dreams and desires.
The visual diary is part of an ongoing long-term research into the lost histories of women from Sanjyot Telang’s Indian community in Goa through memories, objects, folktales, beliefs, recipes, customs and traditions. The aim of the research is to understand how realities of future generations are shaped by non-documentation, how sub-communities thrive without scripts, how generational patterns play out in unobtrusive ways, and how art can help bring a new perspective.
About the photographer
Sanjyot Telang is an Indian photographer, born and raised in Bombay, India. Following her European Master’s in Photography in Paris, she develops an array of vibrant images through photography and painting.
Since 2012, Sanjyot lives and works in Paris. She also intervenes in education to facilitate studio courses, as well as photo workshops.
Working as a photographer for 15 years in fashion and advertising, Sanjyot blends the spontaneity of her subjects with her personal style inspired by Indian heritage, cinema and nostalgia.
Interested by the impact of her work on social norms and aesthetics of contemporary art, Sanjyot’s work has been featured on BBC World, France Culture, Paris Mois de la Photo and Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Sanjyot is a Spéos 2012 graduate from the 1-year European Master’s in Professional Photography, specializing in studio.
