On Wednesday 28 January 2026 from 6 pm, Quai de la Photo will host the launch of the new edition of the book Photograph Like a Pro with Spéos and the Stop-System Method, written by Pierre-Yves Mahé and Philippe Bachelier.

Book signing and dedications
On the occasion of this launch, both authors will be present to sign and dedicate the book, from 6 pm to 8 pm. A time for exchange open to professionals, students, and anyone interested in the foundations and practice of photography.
A reference work devoted to a method for understanding and mastering light, the Stop System is intended for photographers, teachers, students, and image professionals who wish to acquire — or strengthen — a rigorous understanding of exposure.
A venue dedicated to contemporary photography, Quai de la Photo offers a particularly suitable setting for presenting a book that places the understanding of image-making and light at the heart of photographic practice.
The Stop System: a method based on the essential principles of photography
Created more than 20 years ago by Pierre-Yves Mahé, the Stop System is based on a fundamental foundation: understanding light through the three parameters that structure every photographic image — aperture, shutter speed, and sensitivity. While tools have evolved, these principles remain unchanged and continue to form the basis of any well-controlled exposure.
The Stop System offers a clear method for analyzing a lighting situation, understanding the relationships between these parameters, and anticipating the final rendering of the image. It is not an empirical or intuitive approach, but a methodological framework that coherently links photographic intention with technical choices.
This rigor makes the Stop System a lasting tool, capable of adapting to technological developments without losing its relevance.

An even more relevant tool in the digital photography era
From the first photographic device developed by Nicéphore Niépce in 1816 (featured on the book’s cover) to today’s most advanced digital sensors, photography has continually evolved on a technical level. Yet despite these major transformations, the fundamental principles of exposure — and therefore of understanding light — remain unchanged.
With the advent of digital technology, photographic practices have changed profoundly.
Immediate access to images, automated camera functions, and post-production have altered usage and workflows. Nevertheless, exposure remains a central issue.
In this context, the Stop System remains fully relevant. Adapted to digital photography, it allows photographers not to rely solely on automation, but to understand what the camera is doing and why. It provides a method for reading light, anticipating variations, controlling contrast, and translating visual intention into precise settings.
The book highlights this continuity between analog and digital photography: while media and tools change, the logic of light remains. The Stop System thus acts as a bridge between the science of exposure and contemporary photographic practice.
A book rooted in teaching and transmission
The Stop System is closely linked to the history of photographic education. Taught for many years at the Spéos photography school, it has accompanied several generations of photographers, authors, and teachers.
The book reflects this pedagogical experience. It was designed as a working tool, allowing for a gradual appropriation of the method. Its clear structure, precise vocabulary, and grounding in practice make it a tool regularly used in training contexts, as well as in demanding self-taught approaches.
This new edition reflects the continuity of this transmission, while responding to the current needs of photographers facing constantly evolving technical and visual environments.
A reissue faithful to the original spirit
This new edition provides adjustments and clarifications in order to improve the readability of the method and its relevance to contemporary practices. It follows a logic of thoughtful updating, respectful of the book’s original spirit.
Through this reissue, Spéos reaffirms its commitment to teaching photography as a living language, based on technical rigor, sensitivity to reality, and creativity.
