L. Mikelle Standbridge will present “Photo-Bodies and Photo-Stories” at the Spéos Gallery, 7 rue Jules Vallès 75011 Paris, from November 8, 2023 to December 7, 2023.

About the exhibition
This exhibition is the coming together of two bodies of work, united by haptics (a sense of touch) and an inquiry around photography: what it can convey and in which format.
The first series, “Photo-Bodies: In Between the Edge of a Stitched Soul”, is composed of photo-sculptures. Curved dimensionality and the tactility of the manipulated photographic paper seem best to align with the representation of human bodies.
The second series, “Shoebox Stories: The Eclipse of Family Histories and Surrogate Memory Tropes” addresses a different photographic dilemma, namely the power of the family photograph to ensure legacy.
With today’s overwhelming amount of unedited digital cellphone photography replacing yesterday’s few dozen prints, we risk not having the time and organizational skills to pass on significant images to future generations, and – most importantly – to accompany each image with the oral storytelling tradition that Generation X and earlier grew up with. This series is designed, like a deck of cards (with a color and word associated with each photo trope) to trigger memories and bring forth verbal recall.
