On the occasion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Spéos, an international photography school, took part in a major partnership with Agence France-Presse (AFP) and the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP).
This sports photojournalism training project enabled professional photographers to develop their skills in real-world conditions, at the heart of a major international sporting event.
Spéos, a Photography School Committed to Photojournalism Training
Recognised for its educational expertise, Spéos is a photography school specialising in training for careers in imaging, photojournalism and professional photography. Through this partnership with AFP and MAP, Spéos reinforces its position as a leading institution in photojournalism training at an international level.
This programme is part of a practical, skills-based approach, designed to meet the current demands of international news agencies and media organisations.
A Sports Photojournalism Training Programme Between Paris and Morocco
The training programme began in Paris, at the Spéos campus. Supervised by Didier Fèvre and John Schults, Spéos instructors and experienced photojournalists, together with the AFP team, participants deepened their understanding of the core principles of photojournalism training, including:
- visual storytelling and sports narrative,
- editorial standards and adherence to journalistic guidelines,
- technical mastery of sports photography,
- responsiveness and the ability to work under pressure.
The second phase of the training took place in Morocco throughout the duration of AFCON 2025. MAP photographers received daily, hands-on guidance from Didier Fèvre, directly on the field and at the heart of the competition. This professional immersion in sports photography provided the opportunity to work under real conditions of a major international event: field access, time constraints, editorial selection and rapid image transmission.
A Professional Immersion to Train Sports Photojournalists
This full-scale, real-life experience gave participants the opportunity to:
- develop advanced expertise in sports photography,
- strengthen their field photojournalism skills,
- understand the expectations of major international news agencies,
- prepare for the profession’s international standards.
The objective of this training programme is to prepare photographers for upcoming major sporting events, in particular the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
International Partnerships Serving Photography Education
Through its collaborations with AFP, MAP and other major industry players, Spéos develops photography training programmes firmly rooted in professional reality. These partnerships enable the school to offer sports photojournalism training directly connected to fieldwork and market needs.
Spéos would like to thank Nikon for providing the photographic equipment essential to the successful delivery of this professional training programme.
