Laetitia Dumez, “Solastalgia”
Laetitia Dumez will present “Solastalgia” at the Spéos Gallery, 7 rue Jules Vallès, 75011 Paris, from 6th February to 22nd March 2024.
Opening of the exhibition: 6th February 2024, from 6pm to 9pm.
About the exhibition
“Solastalgia is a neologism, formed by the combination of the Latin words sōlācium (comfort) and the Greek root -algia (pain, suffering, grief), that describes a form of emotional or existential distress caused by environmental change. It is best described as the lived experience of negatively perceived environmental change.”
Based on the current ecological situation on our planet, this project is a visual interpretation of solastalgia, driven by the need to understand this growing feeling.
The result is a series of photographs showing the effects of environmental and climate change, looking at the consequences of human activity on earth.
With a fashion / fine art approach, each theme portrays human-surreal entities, connecting us to solastalgia through nuanced details and interpretations.
About the photographer
Laetitia Dumez is a fashion and portrait photographer. With a background in graphic design and art direction in Paris, she began her photography career after graduating from Spéos. During this time, she had the opportunity to collaborate with and assist photographers, such as Charlotte Wales and Yvan Fabing.
While working in the fashion industry, Laetitia often curated her own shoots as a way to explore and fulfil her creative instincts. With the relentless need to push into new ways of creation, one of her recent works involves a mixed-media project using CGI.
Laetitia’s images are deeply rooted in the fashion culture. Her inspiration comes primarily from the intricate yet beautiful aspects of nature, as she continually explores and conceptualizes ways to represent the essence of life.
Laetitia Dumez is a 2019 Graduate from the Professional Photography Program in 1 year.
