About the 5 Spéos finalists

Karine Bizard presents “L’automne du repenti”. In the 1980s, Hans Joachim Klein was a member of the German extreme left, and later of the Red Army Faction (RAF) and the Baader Gang. In 1975, in Vienna, he took part in the hostage-taking of 66 people alongside the terrorist Carlos, during a conference of OPEC ministers. He left terrorism and went on the run for 20 years. He was arrested in 1998, extradited to Germany, tried and sentenced to 9 years in prison. Released in 2003, he returned to Normandy and was pardoned in 2009. He died on November 9, 2022. In the ashes of his youth, utopias, the death of ideals, revolt, solitude, pride, isolation, failures, alcohol and cigarettes…

Jeannot: with the series “En attendant la mort” (Waiting for death), Jeannot examines the relationship between human beings and animals. From face to face, from eye to eye, from coat to coat, his questioning focuses on the path dug out to get there.

Jodhi Mather-Pike presents “Look into my eyes”, a documentary project that examines the relationships between people and love/sex dolls. The people photographed live with their dolls in a similar way to conventional couples – domestic, sexual and romantic scenes take place. Technological advances will continue to make these dolls more human, and this project is a snapshot of the current situation. The images represent 5 different people living in France and England. The project also includes photos of a doll showroom in the Paris region.

Eva Morel presents “Ocean Sole”. An estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste pollute our oceans; 70% sink into deep waters, 15% float and 15% land on our beaches. Kenya-based nonprofit Ocean Sole cleans and recycles the waste, and specifically uses flip-flops to create brightly colored works of art. It produces sculptures of endangered animal species to raise public awareness of wildlife conservation.

Anton Reyes presents a series entitled “In the footsteps of the invisible”. He went to meet the garbage collectors, those “men and women in green” who are often invisible despite their conspicuous uniforms. He was able to follow them on various operations, particularly at night, when the work they do is unseen and therefore unappreciated. By placing the cleaners at the heart of the urban environment, this photographic series aims to reveal the essential and tedious dimensions of this daily work of endless repetition.
